Davie County Emergency Management

The system of Emergency Management got it's beginning as civil defense in the post world war II era due to the possibility of nuclear attack. After the cold war era came to a close it was decided that a all hazard defense to protect the citizens was needed. From this came what we now know as Emergency Management. The Emergency Management system is based on four phases outlined below.

Preparedness        Mitigation          Response          Recovery

Preparedness :  This phase of Emergency Mgt. represents the largest portion of the duties the EM staff perform. Examples of the preparedness phase includes

  • Plan writing
  • Exercise Emergency Plans
  • Public Education

Response :  In the response phase it is actually the way it sounds personnel respond to the emergency or disaster as it is happening. In this phase under the unified command structure the EM Coor. is able to call in additional resources from state and federal agencies  to help mitigate the incident.

Mitigation : Mitigation can be described as a effort to lessen or prevent the impact on the citizens and visitors of the County of Davie. A example of mitigation if restriction of rebuilding in known flood planes.

Recovery :  The recovery phase starts when the threat has been mitigated or is over. Recovery is a effort to return to a normal state prior to the incident weather this was natural or man made. This phase may be as short as a few days or in case of a major incident such as a hurricane or tornado may take years.
